Media Services Unit

The Media Services Unit is the educational media production arm of the Ministry of Education. It has as its responsibility the development of educational materials in print, audio, and audio-visual formats to further enhance the teaching-learning process. Through this unit, materials such as: charts, textbooks, picture books, teachers’ guides, instructional audio CDs and DVDs are produced.  This is done through four areas: Print and Small Media, Television, Audio and Information and Communications Technology. The unit also has an Evaluation and Utilisation Section which evaluates all educational materials, including books for the Approved Primary and Secondary Textbooks Lists which forms part of the National Textbook Programme. The unit also partners with other units in developing brochures, fliers, books and manuals for internal staff use.

Educational Technology

The Educational Technology Section of the Media Services Unit is the section that is responsible for the production of materials in audio-visual formats to enhance the teaching-learning process. It also helps in developing materials for MoE staff to ensure efficiency, productivity and to enhance customer service. This is executed through four arms: Print and Small Media, Video Production, Audio Production and Information and Communication Technology.

Print and Small Media

The Print and Small media arm of the Educational Technology Section is responsible for the development of educational materials in print format. These materials include posters/charts, teachers’ guide, textbooks, brochures, flyers and readers. This is done in partnership with a team of illustrators, graphic artists, book designers, writers, educators and evaluators.

Video

The Video arm of the Educational Technology Section is responsible for the development of educational materials in audio-visual or video format. These materials include educational music videos, features/documentaries and digital stories. This is done in partnership with a team of videographers, actors, graphic artists and other video production personnel.

Audio

The Audio arm of the Educational Technology Section is responsible for the development of educational materials in audio format. These materials include audio books, songs and jingles. This is done in partnership with a team of educators, voice actors, writers and other audio production personnel.

Evaluation

The Evaluation section of the Media Services Unit has as its responsibility coordinating the review of textbooks and other educational materials, including books, CDs, DVDs, and ICT-based learning products, for the National Textbook Programme, and for use in Jamaica’s public schools This is done in partnership with educators who are experts in their respective fields or subject areas. The section also trains educators how to evaluate educational materials and utilise them to improve the teaching learning process.
