STUDENT PLACEMENT
One Hundred percent of our students were placed in high schools. The Ministry of Education
and Youth was able to achieve this as a result of the provision of additional classrooms to a
number of our schools as well as our partnerships with two registered private high schools.
Notwithstanding the full placement in seven high schools, the Ministry is cognizant that there
are still a large number of high schools still operating on a shift system. Table 2 shows the
methods used for placement of students.
Table 2: Placement Methods used
Placement Method No. Females No. Males Total Placed
Choice/Preference 15,303 15,681 30,984
Proximity 2,060 2,074 4,134
Manual 90 476 566
Excluded 253 387 640
Additionally, 30,984 (85.82%) students were placed in one of their preferred schools. Since
2015 parents have been given the opportunity to indicate two additional school choices in
addition to the standard five that they had in the past. These two additional choices were
selected from a cluster of schools that were within a 10-mile radius of the primary school the
attend.
Four Thousand One Hundred and Thirty-four (11.45%) of students were placed in secondary
level schools that are in proximity to the schools that they currently attend. A further 1.57%
(566) of students were placed manually in secondary level schools in proximity to the address
they submitted at registration.
